Maintaining Outdoor Security Using Robot Security Guards

การตรวจการและรักษาความปลอดภัยภายนอกอาคารด้วย หุ่นยนต์รักษาความปลอดภัย

Outdoor security at large sites can be challenging for management. Even with plenty of security staff on regular patrol schedules, it is impossible to keep all areas under surveillance all the time. This way of maintaining outdoor security also comes at a high cost. Static CCTV can help, but there are inevitably “blind spots” where potential perpetrators can hide and once again, monitoring these systems is labor intensive and comes at a high cost. There are autonomous robotic solutions now on the market however which can help to plug the security gaps and reduce manpower costs. In this blog, we will look more closely at maintaining outdoor security using robot security guards.

Types of robot security guards

The market for automated security solutions is growing and growing and there are now a multitude of different robot security guards on the market. Here are some examples deployed currently at a variety of venues:

Patrol Robots

Patrol robots monitor areas autonomously on a fixed patrol route 24/7 even in adverse light and weather conditions. They are equipped with multiple sensors and 360 degree cameras for all-round surveillance and obstacle avoidance, and they return to a charging station when required. Depending on their configuration, they can also be used to perform monitoring tasks which may be dangerous for humans. Patrol robots have become even more popular during the COVID-19 pandemic as no human contact is needed in their operation.

Electronic Vehicles

These security robots look rather like a high-tech golf cart and are ideal for patrolling large outdoor sites. Electronic vehicles, such as the one developed by Guardforce Thailand, are equipped with a solar-power kit, 24-hour recording high-definition camera and voice communication connected to the control room at all times. This means staff in the control room can remotely monitor real-time occurrences on the site and instantly respond in case of an incident.

Drone Patrolling

Drone patrolling is ideal for monitoring large sites, including outdoor entertainment venues where many people are present. Modern security drones, again such as the one developed by Guardforce Thailand, are equipped with self-navigation using digital mapping along with an object avoidance system. The in-built high-definition camera allows for real-time viewing or recording of a venue from above. The video feed is viewed by staff in the control room for immediate response if needed. On a full charge, a security drone can operate for around 30 minutes.

Key benefits of robot security guards

  • Cost effective – they represent a great saving over their human counterparts
  • Labour optimization – using robots to help maintain security means that fewer human guards are needed to cover the same area
  • Moveable – unlike static CCTV, robot security guards are movable to avoid the risk of blind spots
  • Multi-functional – depending on the configuration, robots can perform much more than surveillance, for instance concierge and customer service duties
  • Consistent performance – robots never tire and never lose concentration
  • Performance exceeding human capabilities – robots can monitor areas from height, operate in adverse light and weather conditions and perform dangerous tasks
